Hunt For a Good Book

This week is National Children's Book Week. Here at McKenzie we enjoyed special activities every day. Monday's theme was "Hunt For a Good Book!" We wore camo and army green. One lucky student from each class got a golden ticket in their book and won a giant chocolate bar from Mrs. Coldwell.

Poetry

Ms. Bishop's and Ms. Smith's classes wrote cinquains.  A cinquain is a five-line poem that describes a noun.  We know that a noun is a person, place, or thing.  We also know that adjectives are describing words and verbs are action words.

We're Poets!

The second grade students started their poetry unit this past week and to start off the unit we decided to take a look at things through the eyes of a poet. The students wore poetry masks to help their creativity flow as a poet. We discussed how the ceiling looked with regular eyes and we came up with; white with lines and black spots and stuff hanging from it, then we put on our poet eyes and many students saw the ceiling in a new way.

"It looks like a Cookies and Cream Hershey bar."- Caitlyn C.

"The ceiling is a big bowl of cookies and cream ice cream."- Omar

We also wrote shape poems.  A shape poem is a poem written in the shape of an object.
