| Way to go, Omar! |
This is the home of the amazing McKenzie Second Grade. Our teachers are Mrs. McLaughlin, Ms. Bishop, Mrs. White (Bilingual), Mrs. Walker (ESL) and Miss Smith (1st/2nd grade class). We will have a fun year writing, learning, experimenting, and having a great time in second grade.

Beetles!
Each week we get out mealworms out and examine their life cycle stages. We started with 52 larva. This week we had 27 larva, 10 pupa, and 15 adults.

Fact Families
Lions, Zebras, and Ghost oh my! Our Fact Family Houses were full of all kinds of animals and creatures! Second grade this week created houses full of facts and created stories to go along with their fact family.
A Fact Family is a group of addition facts together with the related subtraction. For example, 5 + 6 = 11, 6 + 5 = 11, 11 -5 = 6, and 11- 6 = 5
After we created our fact family houses we adventured outside and drew our families on the sidewalk with chalk. We love being able to show our amazing math skills everywhere we go.
Personal Narrative
Last week we started writing our personal narratives. We hope you enjoy reading our stories.
Christian R:
Me and my family went to the pool. When we got to the pool I ran to the pool and jumped. Splash! I got everyone wet. Then they got me wet on purpose. Then I went under water. Then I pretended to be a shark. I came up and scared everyone. Then we left.
Sebastian:
I went outside. I hate getting my dog, but I had to. Now let’s go to the good part. My dog growled at me. Grrrrr!!! He was chasing me. Aaaaaahhhhhh! Then I got him and my brother came outside. Then I took fleas off my dog with my brother. Then it was a good day.
Ryan:
I went to the water park. My mom came with me. Me and my mom went into the water castle. There was a giant bucket of water. It tipped over and splash! We got soaked. My friend Kylie and her mom, Amanda, my, and I were being pulled around a giant rock surrounded by water. My mom helped me when the water was pulling me away from her. In the water park there was a place with waves. My mom and Amanda were sitting in the wavy water while me and Kylie were in giant floats. The waves were pushing us away from our moms. In the water park there were other giant water slides and they were yellow. There were some water beds. They had handles, so we layed down on our stomachs and we slid down the slide. I was scared. At the park they had life jackets at water land. It was fun because there were giant mushrooms. Kylie brought her life jacket. On the mushrooms was a waterfall. Me and Kylie went through the waterfall and under the mushroom. We left the water park.
When it was the first day of school I was happy to learn about math and get books so I can get smart and to read chapter books. I want to draw and color stuff so the drawing looks good. Then I did my work at my table.
Eric:
It happened at my house that was my sixth birthday. There was cake at my birthday. My friends were there, and my cousins were there, too. There were presents, too. It happened at 8:00 on Sunday.

Interesting Writing
Our classes are practicing making our writing interesting. This week we learned three ways to begin a story that will make our readers want to continue reading.
First is to use a SOUND to start our story. "Splash! My friend did a cannon ball into the swimming pool."
Second is to begin with an EXCITING STATEMENT. "Emma raced across the room to the fireplace and grabbed the green birthday gift bag."
Last, we learned to use TALKING at the beginning of our writing. "Yum! This cupcake is delicious."
Next week we will be working on the stories some more.

Spelling with your eyes closed?!
This week we learned a new and fun way to spell words. It's called spelling with your eyes closed. First Mrs. White writes the word on the board. Then we have to clap the syllables and snap each letter. Once we have finished clapping and snapping we close our eyes and have to remember the way the word looked and have to write it on our paper WITH OUR EYES CLOSED!! This is a fun way of remembering the way words look and it helped us with our spelling. Try it out and let us know if you like it.
Freedom Week
This week is Celebrate Freedom Week and 2nd grade has been learning about the different symbols that represent the United States. One of those symbols is the United States flag. We learned that each star represents a state and that the stripes represent the first 13 colonies. Each student created their own flag that would represent the Ms. Bishop's Second grade class. The students used symbols and colors that would reflect our class and school.

Mealworms!

This week in class we learned a lot of things. We started our unit on insects and learned that all living things need air, food, water, and a home to grow healthy and strong. We also built our mealworm's habitat using oat bran, a cup and a lid. We observed their unique ways and found out that they are very fast and don't like the light.

We talked about basic needs for air, food, water, and habitats. We know that animals need their basic needs met in their habitats, but we found out that animals also need a habitat that offers protection from predators and danger.
We drew pictures of the habitats we were going to build for our mealworms and then we built the habitat.
We made our mealworm habitats from a cup with a lid so that the mealworms have protection. If the mealworms were to crawl around the room they would be in danger of being stepped on, going into the vacuum cleaner, or being swept up by the janitors. We poked holes in the lids so that our animals could get air. We put oat bran in the cups because the mealworms like to hide in it. The food we provided for our mealworms is carrots. Our mealworms will not drink water. They will get the water they need from the carrots they eat.
Finally, we started a tally chart for our mealworms. We will track how many mealworms we have at each stage in the insect life cycle. We found out today that a mealworm is the larva stage, and when they are adults they will have wings. Mrs. McLaughlin won't tell us what our insects will be when they are adults. We will have to watch them and see.

Scientists
This week we learned about scientists. Enjoy some of our work and see what we learned.
Andrew said, " A scientist studies animals and their habitats."
Alejandra said, "A scientist studies stars in the sky to see stars with a telescope."
Marc said, "A scientist studies cats and their bones and their blood."
Mia said, "A scientist sees a butterfly."
Angelo said, "A scientist is a guy who discovers tornadoes."
Corey said, "A scientist studies rocks."
Ben said, "A scientist discovers plants."
