This week in class we learned a lot of things. We started our unit on insects and learned that all living things need air, food, water, and a home to grow healthy and strong. We also built our mealworm's habitat using oat bran, a cup and a lid. We observed their unique ways and found out that they are very fast and don't like the light.

We talked about basic needs for air, food, water, and habitats. We know that animals need their basic needs met in their habitats, but we found out that animals also need a habitat that offers protection from predators and danger.
We drew pictures of the habitats we were going to build for our mealworms and then we built the habitat.
We made our mealworm habitats from a cup with a lid so that the mealworms have protection. If the mealworms were to crawl around the room they would be in danger of being stepped on, going into the vacuum cleaner, or being swept up by the janitors. We poked holes in the lids so that our animals could get air. We put oat bran in the cups because the mealworms like to hide in it. The food we provided for our mealworms is carrots. Our mealworms will not drink water. They will get the water they need from the carrots they eat.
Finally, we started a tally chart for our mealworms. We will track how many mealworms we have at each stage in the insect life cycle. We found out today that a mealworm is the larva stage, and when they are adults they will have wings. Mrs. McLaughlin won't tell us what our insects will be when they are adults. We will have to watch them and see.

So mealworms like oat bran? Personally, I like peanut butter Cap'n Crunch. Mealbugs are used as bait by fishermen. Both fish and birds like to eat mealworms.

WOW! You are some rockin' scientist! I enjoy reading and seeing all of your hard work. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteUghh! Mealworms...worms of any kind...not MY favorite!
ReplyDeleteBut, I am glad that YOU scientists are learning about them!
Mrs. Rogers
I learned a lot about mealworms from your blogs. How would you like to hide in food? The mealworms hid in the oat bran, maybe we can try to hide in pizza! No that wouldn't work we all like pizza, maybe we should hide in brussel sprouts!
ReplyDeleteI think it is so neat this blog is available to friends and family. Stephanie is a family friend and she is so proud of her teacher and class. I call her "Super Star."
