Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is an annual event in which red ribbons are worn as a reminder to children, families and communities to take a stand against drug use through education and by pledging to live a drug-free life in order to create a healthier, safer and drug-free America.

Enjoy some of our work from Red Ribbon week.

Michael:  If drugs are illegal and you're not sick the cops will take you to jail.

Samuel:  Smoking drugs is illegal because you might get sick or die.  Smoking cigarettes is also bad for you because you might die.  If you smoke drugs and if the police see you the police officer will take you to jail.

Sophia:  Drugs are bad for kids and for grown-ups, too.  I think we should say no to drugs.  Why would a person do that?  Drugs can get you sick or die.  That's why I say we will say no to drugs!

Why will you be drug free?

Angelo: Because I don't want to get really sick.

Mia: Because I don't want drugs on me.

Mrs. Lewis: Because drugs are terrible for your body and terrible for your mind.

Mrs. Keating:  Because I want to be in control of my destiny.

Elizabeth:  Because they are bad for your body.

Yara:  I don't want to be drunk.

Rodney:  Because it's bad for us.

Fairy Tales

We wrote some fairy tales this week.  Read and enjoy!

Alejandra
Once upon a time there lived 3 little zebras that their mom went to a trip.  So they decided to build their own house and there was a lion who wanted to eat the little zebras.  But the little zebras were smart to not get near the lion.  So they never got near the lion because their mom told them about the lion.  One day the first little zebra went outside for a bucket of water.  Then the lion came and the little zebra ran in the house of rocks and the lion could not crawl in it.  So he went to the 2nd little zebra and the little zebra saw the lion.  So he ran inside to his house of bricks.  But the lion couldn’t get in the house of bricks.  So the lion went to a house and it was the 3rd little zebra’s house and his house was made of hard sticks.  So the lion tried to crawl under the house but he could not crawl under.  So he left and they were all safe.

M.G.
Once upon a time there was the three little birds and one bad cat.  And the cat was asleep on the couch.  And the birds made a lot of noise.  The cat woke up.  He tried to eat them for his breakfast.  Then they flew outside and lived happily ever after.

Elizabeth
Once upon a time there were 3 little pigs saying bye to their mom.  The 1st little pig built a house of rocks.  The 2nd pig built a house of paper.  The 3rd little pig built a house of bricks.  The wolf came at 3:00 in the afternoon.  The wolf said, “Let me in.”  “No no no, not by my chinny chin chin.”  “Let me in or I’ll blow and I’ll puff your house down.”  And he blew the house down.  He went to the other pig’s house.  He said, “Let me in.”  “No no no, not by my chiny chin chin.  The wolf went to the chimney.  The pigs made a pot.  His 2 little friends helped them.

JaCorey
Once upon a time there were three wolfs and one big bad pig.  The three wolves were sad that they had to leave home.  So they went to build a house.  Soon the big bad pig knocked on the door.  He said, “Let me in or I’ll blow your house down.”  The pig ate the wolf.  And the big fat pig went to the second wolf’s house.  The pig said, “Let me in or I will blow your house down.”  The pig ate the second wolf.  The big pig went to the third wolf’s house.  The pig said, “Let me in.”  The pig went in the chimney.  And got burned.  And got cooked.  The wolves ate the pig.  And the three wolves lived happily ever after.

Ben
Once upon a time there were three little penguins.  They built their houses out of bricks.  The bad guy was a killer whale.  “The whale is coming,” said the penguins.  “And I’ll push, and I’ll push, and I’ll push your house down,” said the whale.  Boom, the whale did the same thing to the other penguins, but one of the penguins survived.  Then the big shark came and ate the big whale.

Reading with Mrs. White

This week in reading we explored the different ingredients or elements that go into a story to make it fun such as setting, character, conflict, climax and resolution of a story. After reading A Bad Case of the Stripes our class broke the story down into the literary elements and wrote about it. Once we finished with our writing we decided that we all had a bad case of the stripes and drew ourselves with multicolored stripes. But our stripes aren't any ordinary stripes, they have patterns!

Somebody Wanted But So

In reading this week we learned about writing summaries using the “Somebody wanted, but, so” strategy.

On Thursday we worked in partners to make summaries of stories.  Some of us chose Moon Bear’s Pet
by Frank Asch, and some of us read Lemonade For Sale by Stuart J. Murphy.

Lemonade for Sale

Andrew and Kobe:
Somebody: Elm Street Kids
Wanted: Money to rebuild their clubhouse
But: on Thursday they hardly sold any lemonade
So: Friday they moved next to the juggler and got enough money to rebuild the clubhouse.

Sebastian and Felipe:
The Elm Street Club wanted money.  But no people came. So they went where the guy did tricks.

Ben and Marc:
The kids wanted money but nobody comes to their lemonade stand.  So then they made money because the new kid was juggling next to the kids.

Ryan and Rodney:
Once there were kids and their piggy bank was empty.  They needed money.  But a new kid came and got in their way.  In the end they made lots and lots of money.

Moon Bear’s Pet

Collin and Angelo:
Bear wanted a pet. But they were arguing.  In the end they were happy.

Corey and JaCorey:
Bear wanted a pet. But bear and bird started to fight.  So bear and bird and frog are friends.

Rock Star of the Week

Way to go, Omar!

Beetles!

Each week we get out mealworms out and examine their life cycle stages.  We started with 52 larva.  This week we had 27 larva, 10 pupa, and 15 adults.

Our chart showing our mealworms' growth.
The sticky notes are our predictions for this week.

The mealworms like to hide in the oat bran.
We use a magnifying glass to see them better.

We observed our mealworms and beetles.

We recorded our observations.

We added information to our chart.

We played a little bit, too.  Yes, parents, we washed our hands and tables afterward.  :)
